Madurai: The food safety department sealed three shops in K Pudur in Madurai, for distributing unsafe soft drinks. The crackdown was part of a three-day raid conducted from last Friday to Sunday, during which officials served notices to 10 shops and penalized seven others across the city.
According to Jayarama Pandian, designated officer of the department, the raids resulted in the seizure and destruction of 32 litres of spoiled soft drinks.
“Special teams across the city are conducting raids to seize soft drinks that are sold in unhygienic conditions. A total of 207 shops, including manufacturing units and distribution networks, were inspected,” he said. Seven shops were fined 1,000 each for selling these unsafe beverages.
Pandian urged the public to be vigilant and avoid purchasing soft drinks that lack essential details such as manufacturing and expiry dates, company information, and the FSSAI licence number. He also emphasized that these inspections would continue to ensure public safety in Madurai. TNN
