MEERUT: An assistant teacher at a govt school in Sambhal district was suspended after a surprise check by the district magistrate on Wednesday revealed he had been spending “hours on his mobile phone during school time and not checking students’ notebooks correctly”.
The incident came to light when DM Rajendra Pansiya conducted a surprise visit to the school in Ginnaur area of Sambhal.
According to the officials, Pansiya found the teacher, Priyam Goel, holding a mobile phone during school hours and playing games.
Speaking to TOI, the DM said, “I asked if he was regularly using the ‘Diksha’ and ‘Read Along’ apps prescribed by the govt for ease of learning. When I did not get a satisfactory answer, I asked for the hourly details and found the teacher was using the phone for over five hours during school time.”
He added: “I then began checking the copies of students and found glaring mistakes. The teacher had ticked all the answers right without even correcting the mistakes. This was a gross dereliction of duty.”
Pansiya checked six pages from six students’ copies and found 95 mistakes, with nine errors on the first page alone. Basic Shiksha Adhikari was directed to suspend Goel. Meanwhile, the district authority found the village pradhan in an inebriated state on the school premises, prompting an inquiry by the district authority. Despite several attempts, Goel could not be reached for comments.
