Raipur: A driver raped a 50-year-old woman inside a parked passenger bus at the stand in the state capital on Friday night after the accused mixed sedatives in the soft drink he had offered her to drink.
The woman is resident of Saraipali in neighbouring Mahasamumd district and had left home after a dispute with her husband three days ago. She travelled to Raipur in a passenger bus and was staying at bus stand located at Bhatagaon region.
Sensing that she was distressed, a bus driver, Soni Lal Jharia, noticed her and acted sympathetic to her by offering her food and initiating a conversation. According to police, he took the woman for a little excursion in the city on Friday and returned to bus stand around 11 PM, where he followed her inside the bus she was planning to sleep in. He offered her a soft drink mixed with sedatives and the moment woman drank it up, she fell unconscious.
The accused reportedly raped the woman as she was quoted saying in her complaint statement, wherein she also said that the driver asked her not to inform anyone about the incident and tried to act emotional.
Forensic team went to the spot and collected samples of evidence.
An FIR was lodged and Jharia was arrested while his aide conductor was also detained under suspicion of his involvement, but he was released after initial probe. Police said that Jharia is a habitual alcoholic and is a resident of Madhya Pradesh.
