Surat: The Surat prevention of crime branch (PCB) arrested two persons posing as eunuchs to smuggle liquor from Daman to Surat. The accused had been smuggling liquor from the union territory Daman for the past couple of months. Police seized liquor worth Rs 3.15 lakh from them. The police also arrested three others who were involved in liquor smuggling along with the two accused identified as Jenish Bhavnagari (27) and Akbar Shaikh (32) on Thursday night.
PCB police inspector R S Suvera told TOI: “We got a tip-off that liquor would be delivered in Nanpura area. We kept a watch and caught five people. Out of the five, two had come to take delivery while three had come to deliver the liquor in an autorickshaw.”
“Two of the persons who had come to deliver liquor were posing as eunuchs. They dressed and did make-up as eunuchs to avoid police checking,” Suvera added.
Police also arrested the autorickshaw driver Abhay Singh (23) who ferried the two accused. Bhavnagari, Shaikh and Singh would regularly go to Daman in autorickshaw and bring liquor to Surat to distribute in small consignments to other bootleggers.
Two persons who came to take the liquor delivery Prashant Kahar and Gunjan Kahar were also arrested. Police seized the autorickshaw, two mopeds, six mobile phones and 204 bottles of liquor worth Rs 3.15 lakh from the accused.
