Surat: A love marriage for 18 months went horribly wrong with a man allegedly killing his 26-year-old wife and then attempting suicide in a city-based hotel late on Friday night.
The tragedy unfolded in a hotel room on Palanpur Canal Road where Rohit Katkar and his estranged wife Nishi had decided to meet, ostensibly to discuss their nagging marital disputes and bury the hatchet.
Police said some altercation happened at Rohit stabbed Nishi in the room. Rohit then reached the Pal police station and informed the cops that he had killed his wife and himself consumed antibiotic tablets to end his life. Katkar was admitted to the New Civil Hospital as his health started deteriorating.
Police suspect that it was a pre-planned murder as Rohit was carrying the weapon. He was studying chartered accountancy (CA) and doing some small business.
Police rushed to the hotel and recovered the body of Nishi, a lawyer working with Bull Group Hotel and sent it for postmortem.
Investigation so far revealed that Katkar and Nishi tied the knot after a brief affair around one-and-a-half years ago. However, they developed disputes in Dec last year, and Nishi went to stay with her parents who also live in the city.
“We have learnt that the couple decided to meet in a hotel which is close to the houses of both and strike a compromise. However, some fight broke out between them during the meeting, and the woman was killed,” said an officer of Pal police station.
The investigation has been handed over to the assistant commissioner of police, K-division since the accused is booked under sections of Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act (SCSTPA) along with murder under the BNS.
“We are yet to question the accused in detail since he is under treatment. We are questioning the family members to know more about the differences that soured their marriage,” the officer said.
