Thiruvananthapuram: The cabinet on Wednesday approved the tender for the proposed Sreekaryam flyover project. The construction of the 535-metre-long four-lane flyover was mooted considering the proposed metro rail project in the state capital. With the govt approving the tender, the construction will start in Oct. The Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL), the implementing agency of the metro rail project, is set to sign an agreement with the Kochi-based contractor soon.
It took the govt a year to decide on the tender, as the company that participated in the tender procedure quoted 18% higher than the actual estimate.
The delay was because the govt could not go for a re-tender as it would cause additional expenses.
"Now, the project has overcome all the hurdles. The KMRL can proceed with the tender, and the agreement will be signed soon. This flyover is a crucial part of the first phase of the metro rail project proposed in the city. However, the decision on the flyover proposed at Pattom will be made only after finalising the alignment of the metro rail project," said a source close to the project.
The estimated completion period of the flyover is two years. A total of Rs 98 crore has been disbursed to the landowners who conceded their land for the project. As many as 168 buildings were razed as part of the land acquisition. The district administration has acquired 1.34 hectares from 168 private parties in Cheruvakkal, Ulloor, and Pangappara villages. Once the metro project is implemented, the rail pillars will be built on the flyover's median.
