They admitted to committing six offences in Gujarat.
The police said that they had a peculiar way of stealing from the trains. “They would stay in the hotels near the railway stations and board the trains during the night as passengers entered the AC or sleeper coaches. They mostly targeted women passengers who fell asleep and stole purses, mobile phones or laptops,” the railway police said.
After taking the valuables, they disposed of the purses in the coach’s toilets. Then the thieves used to leave the train at the nearest station and walk out as passengers. If they managed to get expensive jewellery, they would go to their native towns and sell it off.
The gang has been booked by the Uttar Pradesh police under its Gangsters and Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act in the past. While Yadav has three offences registered against him, Panchal has five cases against him. Mishra has been booked in eight offences by the police in different states. In Gujarat, the gang had committed offences in Ahmedabad, Vadodara, and Nadiad.
