Vadodara: A 17-year-old has scripted a miraculous recovery after suffering critical head injuries and a fractured lower limb in a road accident that necessitated hospitalization for 13 days.
Mosin Khan (name changed), a resident of Bhalej town in Anand district, was admitted to the Karamsad-based Shree Krishna Hospital after the accident last month.
For 13 days, Mosin remained unconscious.
He was closely monitored in the paediatric department ICU, where he underwent a tracheostomy and ventilator support. His family, distraught yet hopeful, waited anxiously as each day brought small signs of progress. On the 14th day (Sunday evening), Mosin opened his eyes, signalling the beginning of the journey towards recovery.
Neurosurgeon Dr S Bhattacharjee explained: “It was a case of diffused axonal injury (a type of severe traumatic brain injury) which is very serious. This kind of severe head injury in adults takes much more time in recovery, and at times, results in partial recovery. But since he was a child, the recovery was faster.”
“After stabilizing his condition in the ICU, he was transferred to the paediatric ward for further care and observation,” said Dr Bhattacharjee.
He was transferred to the orthopaedic ward for treatment of his fractured right tibia. “He underwent internal fixation surgery, which involved the placement of metal plates and screws,” said orthopaedic surgeon Dr Dhruv Sharma.
“His subsequent physiotherapy sessions were instrumental in restoring mobility and strength to his injured leg,” he said, adding that the teen recovered after a 27-day stay at the hospital.
Atul Patel, chairman of Charutar Arogya Mandal, said the treatment was free of cost under the Ayushman Yojana.
