Visakhapatnam: Under the Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs for All (Ujala) scheme,
Andhra Pradesh has distributed approximately 2.20 crore LED bulbs, resulting in annual energy savings of 2,863 million kWh, equivalent to monetary savings of ₹1,145 crore.
Through this, AP has avoided peak demand of 573 MW, making a significant contribution to the country’s energy efficiency landscape.
Moreover, the programme has helped the state avoid the emission of over 33 lakh tonnes of CO2, further solidifying its status as a leader in energy efficiency.
These statistics were revealed by EESL officials when they received the Impact Player of the Year 2023-24 award during the silver jubilee anniversary of the CII Awards, held in Hyderabad. The award recognises EESL’s revolutionary Ujala initiative for its energy efficiency achievements.
Speaking on the occasion, Milind Deora, secretary of the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), said that India is witnessing a remarkable energy revolution, driven by ambitious initiatives aimed at accelerating the shift to clean energy.
Vishal Kapoor, CEO of EESL, expressed his gratitude to CII for this recognition and congratulated the EESL team for their unwavering dedication to energy efficiency.
Animesh Mishra, head of sales and communications at EESL, said that Andhra Pradesh, under the visionary leadership of chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu, has emerged as the pioneer state in energy efficiency initiatives.
“Naidu has become a champion of energy efficiency and environmental protection. AP’s proactive adoption of EESL programmes has earned the state global recognition, with the World Bank ranking it for its energy efficiency readiness in 2016-17. The chief minister’s commitment to sustainability has established Andhra Pradesh as a role model for India in implementing the Ujala scheme,” said Mishra.
