Aasa Kooda — the viral indie song is one of the chart-toppers this year. Soon after Katchi Sera, Sai Abhyankkar created this banger of a song and this time around, he was accompanied by his sister Sai Smriti, who lent her vocals to the track. So, who better than these siblings to talk to this Rakshabandhan? In a chat with us, the siblings, who are the children of popular singers Tipu and Harini, delve into their bond.
‘We both are truly grateful for the love towards Aasa Kooda’Abhyankkar: We both are truly grate ful for the love towards Aasa Kooda.
I didn’t think that the support (for Katchi Sera) would continue, even though I was confident I had given my 100 per cent. I never expected her voice and my production would be so loved.
Smriti: The recording was tedious, but I loved it because the output was beautiful. It was worth every minute we spent. I’m glad I did my first recording with him. It was lovely to see people reciprocate to all that he has put into his music. He’s been creating music since he was 13. He would rather sit in the studio all day than go out.
‘RECORDED HER VOCAL FOR KATCHI SERA ON PHONE, IN OUR LIVING ROOM’ Abhyankkar: She sang the vocal chants in Katchi Sera. We recorded it on the phone in our living room. She said we could later record it properly with a mic but I said I needed the saturation. I wanted it to sound retro.
Smriti: I was like, ‘I got to go to sleep’ and he was like, ‘Just sing’. He worked really hard for Katchi Sera and I was very proud of him as a sister when the song became a success.
‘I WAS MORE EDUCATION-ORIENTED, WHILE HE WAS MORE INTO EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES’Abhyankkar: I wasn’t really into studies, whereas she used to study hard. I was more interested in doing creative stuff. She used to get 80 in exams and used to get scolded for not getting a 90. Meanwhile, I used to get 35.5 and get scolded for why I didn’t score 40, which was the pass mark.
Smriti: I was more education-oriented, while he was more into extracurricular activities. When we know the circle, both of us are candid. When we don’t know people or are put in a different environment, we take some time to get used to that environment.
SHE ALWAYS USED TO GET ME INTO TROUBLE WITH THE TEACHERSAbhyankkar: She gives me a reality check. Also, when we were in school, she used to always get me into trouble with the teachers. She’ll be rightfully honest and would be like, ‘Yes ma’am, Abhay is wrong.’ And I would be like, ‘I am your brother!’
Smriti: He’s more of an emotional support to me. He’s really mature. Whenever I need advice, I go to him. Though I’m the elder one, he is the one who gives me life advice. Also, between us, we never really fight. There will be small fights, but we forget those in just a few minutes.
