Aadhaar card

Aadhaar Number is a 12-digit unique identity number issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) to all Indian residents of based on their biometric and demographic data. Aadhaar literally meaning foundation in Hindi. Aadhaar data is collected by the UIDAI, which is a statutory authority formed under the provisions of the Aadhaar Act (Targeted Delivery of Financial and Other Subsidies, Benefits and Services Act) on July 12, 2016, by the Government of India, under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEITY).

The Aadhaar based Unique Identification numbers (UID) was set up in India with an objective to provide a unique identification number that will be:

(a) robust enough to eliminate duplicate and fake identities
(b) can be verified and authenticated in an easy, cost-effective way

The first UID number or Aadhaar number was issued on September 29, 2010, to a resident of Nandurbar area in the state of Maharashtra. The UID Authority has so far issued more than 107 crore Aadhaar numbers to the residents of India across various states.
