United Nations

The United Nations (UN) is an inter-governmental organization established on October 24, 1945 after the Second World War, in order to prevent conflicts at a global level.

The major objectives of the organisation include international peace and security, promoting human rights, strengthening economic and social development, protecting the environment and providing humanitarian aid in severe cases like famine, natural disasters and armed conflicts.

The organisation won a Nobel Peace Prize in 2001, in two equal portions, to the UN and to the organisation's then secretary general Kofi Annan, for their work in striving for a better and peaceful world.

During its founding, the UN had 51 member states whose number has now become 193; with its headquarters in Manhattan, New York city. It is financed by the contributions from the member states.

The UN has six principle organs – the General Assembly, Security Council, Economic and Social Council, the Secretariat, the International Court of Justice, and the United Nations Trusteeship Council.

The System agencies include the World Bank Group, the World Health Organisation, the World Food Programme, UNESCO and UNICEF.
