Aam Aadmi Party

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), under the leadership of Delhi's Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, was established in November 2012. AAP emerged due to a disagreement between Kejriwal and Anna Hazare about whether to bring politics into the anti-corruption movement. While Hazare opposed the formation of a political party, Kejriwal went on to create AAP.

AAP made its electoral debut in the 2013 Delhi legislative assembly elections, securing 28 out of 70 seats. Forming a minority government with conditional support from Congress, AAP's primary objective was to implement the Jan Lokpal Bill in the National Capital Territory of Delhi. However, within 49 days, the AAP government resigned as the bill failed to gather support from other political parties.

In the subsequent 2015 assembly elections, AAP achieved a landslide victory, winning 67 out of 70 seats in the Delhi Assembly. Arvind Kejriwal returned as the Chief Minister, solidifying AAP's position in Delhi's political landscape.

The Election Commission on 11 April 2023 granted national party status to Aam Aadmi Party. The Commission said the AAP has been named as a national party based on its electoral performance in four states-Delhi, Goa, Punjab, and Gujarat. The Arvind Kejriwal-led party has a government in Delhi and Punjab and has two members of the legislative assembly (MLAs) in Goa. In Gujarat assembly polls, the party won 5 seats with a 12.9% vote share.

AAP is the only party besides the BJP and the Congress that has a government in more than one state. It is trying to expand its political footprint pan India and is part of the new INDIA alliance, a revamped version of the Congress-led UPA. However, AAP and the Congress are an obvious political rival in many states. While both parties realise the compulsion of joining hands at the national level to oppose the BJP, how they face each other in the states may eventually decide their future in the opposition alliance.

The upcoming assembly elections in the key states of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Chhattisgarh may pose a challenge to the unity of INDIA (Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance) - a coalition of opposition parties formed to take on the ruling BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Arvind Kejriwal has already announced that AAP will contest in the coming elections of all three states. Soon after the Election Commission announced the poll schedule, Kejriwal said, "We are prepared to contest the elections in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh with full strength."
