Agartala: The Haora river has risen significantly due to heavy rains, causing severe flooding in the West District of Tripura. This has led to numerous homes being inundated, forcing residents to seek refuge in govt-established relief camps, said West District magistrate Vishal Kumar.
Kumar said a total of 10 temporary relief camps have been established to accommodate the displaced population.
Altogether, 280 people have taken shelter in these camps. The DM assured the public that various measures are being implemented to ensure the safety and well-being of those affected.
“We are continuously monitoring the situation and providing necessary assistance to the displaced individuals,” Kumar added.
The flooding has particularly affected low-lying areas such as Baldakhal, Sri Lanka Basti, and Chandrapur within Agartala city. “These neighborhoods are currently submerged, leading to the mass evacuation of residents. The situation is exacerbated by a recent cyclone that has caused extensive damage throughout Tripura. Large trees have been uprooted, taking down power lines and resulting in widespread power outages,” he said.
Emergency crews are working tirelessly to restore electricity and clear the debris. Despite the extensive property damage and disruptions, no casualty has been reported so far.
