BAREILLY: At least 10 people were killed and many injured after a dust
storm followed by heavy rainfall wreaked havoc in Lakhimpur Kheri, Shahjahanpur and its neighbouring districts on Thursday night. Five deaths were reported in Kheri district, while five, including two kids, died in Shahjahanpur.
Shahjahanpur district magistrate Umesh Pratap Singh told TOI on Friday: “Storm lasted for less than 30 minutes but its impact was severe, particularly in parts of the city.
The kin of those dead will get compensation under the state disaster relief fund within 72 hours.”
In Shahjahanpur’s Satwa Bujurg, two children who had taken shelter near a wall died after it collapsed.
Nearly a hundred trees and many electricity poles were uprooted. A major incident was averted in Shahjahanpur city after a ferris wheel fell on top of shops. Some of the shops were completely damaged, but no one was hurt. Trains on the Lucknow-Moradabad route were also affected.
Police said three men — Indresh Kumar (34), his nephew Manish Kumar (12) and his friend Suraj Kumar (10)were pluck- ing mangoes at an orchard in Shahjahanpur and were critically injured when the wall near a cowshed col- lapsed. They were taken to Powayan community health centre where Man- ish was declared dead while Suraj and Indresh were sent to Shahjahanpur medical college.
They also succumbed to their injuries later.In another incident, a tree fell on a 40-year- old man, Naresh Yadav, a resident of Karonda in Nigohi. At Kudirna village, Ramrati Devi, 62, was buried alive when the house wall collapsed on her. In Lakhimpur Kheri a tree fell on a moving car on the state highway, killing driver Ghanshyam Giri on the spot. The other occupants in the car suffered injuries.Kheri ADM Sanjay Kumar Singh said, “We are collecting data of the number of casualties in the district. We confirmed four deaths so far.”
