Chandigarh: The Chandigarh municipal corporation on Thursday conducted an on-field training workshop for self-help groups (SHGs) to raise awareness and improve waste management. The event was part of the ongoing exercise under the ‘Swachhata Hi Seva’ campaign. This initiative aims to educate and empower both SHGs and citizens on effective solid waste management.
The training session for the SHGs underscored the importance of properly segregating waste into dry, wet, sanitary, and hazardous categories, and adopting home composting to lead a zero waste lifestyle, with the goal of leaving an indelible mark on the path toward a cleaner and greener India.
Additionally, the SHG team will visit households across the city to educate citizens about waste segregation properly and home composting from wet waste.
Chandigarh mayor Kuldeep Kumar stated that this initiative aimed to build on the progress made in waste segregation and management by focusing on raising awareness and encouraging citizens to cultivate the habit of effectively segregating their waste and adopting a zero-waste lifestyle through home composting.
Municipal commissioner Vinay Pratap Singh said as the civic body moves toward 100% collection of segregated waste, this exercise would help the MC further improve waste management in the city. He appealed to all citizens to segregate their waste properly.
