JAIPUR: The “Crime in India 2022” report released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) has attested to the fact that in most rape cases the offenders were known to the survivors.
According to the NCRB’s report, Rajasthan reported the highest number of rape cases at 5,399. In 5,131 of these cases, the offender was known to the survivor. In more than 3,000 cases, the offenders reported by women were family friends, neighbours, employers or other known persons.

As per the report, in 576 cases the offenders were family members, whereas in 1,493 cases the accused were identified to be friends, online friends, live-in partners, or separated husbands.

The NCRB report points out that only in 268 of 5,399 cases was the offender either unknown or not identified by the survivor.
When asked about the matter, a senior police official said that the figures from the NCRB align with the investigators’ findings.
“Over the past several years it has been observed that in a high number of cases, the offender eventually turns out to be an acquaintance of the survivor,” stated the official.

The report also highlights overcrowding and understaffing in state prisons, with a 40% vacancy rate for jail officers. Additionally, Gujarat has the highest number of undertrials of Pakistani origin at 99.
Rape survivor seeks nod to abort, attempts suicide in court
A pregnant 25-year-old rape survivor from Budaun district in UP consumed poison in the compound of a court in Roorkee, Uttarakhand. She was seeking permission from the court to abort the four-month-old foetus. The woman, who was employed in a private firm in Roorkee, took this drastic step right before her case was to be heard. She is now stable and under observation at AIIMS-Rishikesh.
