KANPUR: Seven people were killed and 25 injured early Sunday when the bus they were on fell into a ditch after a collision with a car on the Lucknow-Agra Expressway in the Usrahar area here.
Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Sanjay Kumar Verma reached the accident site and oversaw the rescue operation.
According to the SP, the driver of the car, who had been coming from Lucknow and going to Agra, must have fallen asleep and entered the wrong lane.
The accident occurred around 12.45 am when the car, which had gone out of control, suddenly crossed the divider and hit the sleeper bus, which was carrying a Nagaland registration number and heading to Delhi from Rae Bareli.
The impact of the collision caused the bus to overturn and fall into a 50-foot ditch.
Teams from UPEIDA, local police, and rescue personnel worked tirelessly to rescue passengers trapped in the mangled remains of the bus.
Among the seven dead, three were occupants of the car, while four were travelling in the bus. tnn
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath directed the district administration officials to provide adequate medical care for the injured and expressed his wishes for their swift recovery.
The injured have been taken to the trauma centre of the Uttar Pradesh University of Medical Sciences in Saifai for treatment. Police have identified at least five dead.
Om Prakash Tiwari, 50, a native of Lakhimpur Kheri, was one of the victims from the bus. Another deceased bus passenger has been identified as Yasir Alvi, of Amethi district.
Monu, 25, his mother Chanda Devi (40), and Pradyumn, 24, who all were in the car, died on the spot.
Ranjana, a bus passenger, said the driver was using his mobile phone on the wheel and kept doing that even when he was also asked not to.
