Lucknow: A woman and a teenager were injured after they were attacked by wild animals in two separate incidents reported from Sultanpur on Friday night.
Both are undergoing treatment at Community Health Centres (CHCs). Forest department officials are of the view that the incidents involved jackals.
The first attack was reported around 10pm when 50-year-old Shakuntala Verma of Cheduwari was washing dishes in front of her house.
She saw a jackal-like animal heading towards the cow shed. She called her husband. Suddenly, the animal charged at her. In the attack, she fell and the animal bit her hands, legs, and other body parts. Her husband raised an alarm following which neighbours rushed to help. Seeing the crowd, the animal fled.
Shortly after this, Deepak Yadav of the nearby village of Gaura, was bitten from behind by a wild animal on his right leg while he was standing in front of his house.
He fell to the ground, screaming in pain. Hearing his cries, the villagers ran to his aid, but by then, the animal had fled.
Despite the villagers' hectic search efforts, the animal could not be found in either location. The families rushed both injured to the Motigarpur Community Health Centre, where doctors administered anti-rabies vaccines and discharged them.
The village head's representative from Gaura and BSP district president Suresh Kumar Gautam informed the forest department officials about the incident.
DFO, Sultanpur, Amit Kumar, said as per the preliminary probe, the attacks seem to have been done by a jackal. "We are probing the reasons for it," he said.
On Sept 3, a jackal had taken away a two-month-old baby girl who was sleeping next to her mother. The jackal took her 500m away and bit her. Hearing the baby's cries, the parents and nearby people rushed to the spot. Seeing them, the jackal fled. The family took the baby to the hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
The incident took place in Kodariya Purva village of Sultanpur.
