Madurai: As part of
Southern Railway’s ongoing digitalization, Madurai railway division has launched QR code payment for purchasing unreserved tickets at 106 stations.
Altogether 115 counters at these stations have been provided with QR code devices. This upgrade, combined with availability of ATVMs and UTS mobile app, guarantees faster, smoother cashless transactions for buying unreserved tickets, according to railway officials.
QR code payment will benefit those rushing to stations without having enough currency in their wallets and can’t find ATMs near station premises, say passengers.
Though there are ATMs available in the vicinity of station premises, cash tends to run out in those functioning in busy areas like a railway junction, said K Venkatesh, a passenger at Madurai Junction. He was travelling to Sivakasi and required Rs45 for a ticket but was finding it difficult to change Rs500.
Another passenger who used the facility said she had packed her wallet inside her luggage. “Scanning QR code through mobile phone was an easier option,” said C Saranya from Tirunelveli. TNN
