MEERUT: A 50-year-old mason and his 17-year-old daughter died by consuming poison after the former couldn't afford to send the latter to school though she had scored 75% in class 10 board exam. The incident took place in Meerut's Daurala region on Thursday afternoon.
According to police, Jogendra Prajapati was overwhelmed by financial hardship and took the extreme step after he allegedly failed to support his daughter Khushi's desire for further studies.
Locals in Chirori village said Khushi wanted to continue with her studies. She had been asking her father to get her admitted to class 11 at the local school, but Prajapati could not do so as he was facing a severe financial crisis. It was an uphill task for him to even provide food for his family of seven. CO (Daurala) Suchita Singh told TOI, "On Thursday, Prajapati returned home without getting any work. Apart from Khushi, no one was at home. She again raised concern over her admission. Helpless and demoralised over his abject poverty, Prajapati consumed poison. Khushi couldn't bear it and did the same soon after."
"Neighbours rushed them to the hospital, but they died during treatment," said the CO. Krishna Chaudhary
