Nashik: After the heavy rain razed the house of Shashi Shelke, a blind man, in early Aug, the National Association for the Blind (NAB) provided help to rebuild Shelke’s family home.
“I was at a loss, unable to fathom how I could reconstruct my house and care for my mother and brother. I approached the NAB authorities, and they promptly decided to help me,” Shashi, a worker, said.
Shashi Shelke, 34, is the resident of a slum in Vajreshwari Nagar on the city’s Peth Road.
He lives with his 86-year-old mother and his brother, Balu Shelke, who has learning difficulties.
Heavy downpour, in the beginning of Aug, completely damaged their house. Struggling to make ends meet, Shashi Shelke approached the NAB for help.
Upon learning about the incident, the NAB, led by president Rameshwar Kalantri, honorary general secretary Gopi Mayur, vice-president and chairman of Blind Welfare Suryabhan Salunkhe, and joint secretary Mukteshwar Munshettiwar, visited Shelke’s house and resolved to reconstruct a dwelling for the family.
“Considering the dire circumstances Shashi and his family found themselves in, the office-bearers decided to help him without hesitation. The NAB procured the necessary materials for the construction of the house and even provided the essential utensils for the beneficiary,” Munshettiwar explained.
“We made temporary arrangements for the family while constructing the house, which was handed over to them on Aug 15,” he added.
Shelke said that he was unable to respond to the help provided to him by the NAB.
