Mayor to build house for family rendered homeless by rain
Mangaluru: Mayor Sudheer Shetty Kannur has brought a glimmer of hope to the Ganesh-Rohini family of Vivekanagar in Kodialbail ward, Mangaluru. The family, including their children, was forced to relocate to a temporary shelter after their house collapsed due to heavy rain that pounded the area a few weeks ago.
With their bank accounts depleted, the family found themselves in a dire situation.

However, the mayor has taken it upon himself to construct a house worth Rs 8 lakh for the family, without relying on govt funds.
"The family of Ganesh, who works as a porter, is in a dicey situation due to a financial crunch. The couple, with four girl children, had no other option as their 50-year-old house collapsed due to heavy rain. Hence, we have shifted the family to the green room of a community hall of the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) in Vivekanagar. Currently, they have been living in limited space, and they are unable to afford rebuilding the house," the mayor told TOI.
The mayor has already begun the process to construct a house for the family, at the same place at Vivekanagar in Kodialbail.
"As the mayor of the city and the corporator of the Kodialbail ward, I thought of doing something for the poor family. Hence, I have already laid the foundation for the house and the work has also begun. Since the family has only about 1.5 cents of land, I have planned to construct a 450sqft house for them with all necessary facilities in it. I will bear the entire cost of the house on my own. Since there are some technical issues, the city corporation is also not able to provide them a house under any govt scheme. I have plans to complete the work before Jan," Shetty said.
