Shillong: Chief minister Conrad K Sangma told the Meghalaya assembly on Tuesday said the state govt would first verify the reports about the “anti-missionary school campaign” in neighbouring
Assam before taking up the matter with its counterpart in Dispur, and at the same time, assured safety and security of the people residing along the inter-state boundary.
The chief minister was replying to a zero hour notice moved by United Democratic Party (UDP) legislator from Nongpoh, Mayralborn Syiem, on the alleged decision of a lesser known radical Hindu group, which has been on a poster campaign asking missionary schools across Assam to remove Christian symbols and churches from their premises and stop using educational institutions for religious purposes.
“The superintendents of police and the DG will be informed that necessary manpower (are asked to conduct) patrolling to ensure people have a sense of confidence that they will be with them or protect them if any situation is to happen,” Conrad said.
“However, it would be incorrect for me to respond without verifying the fact. Therefore, we need to verify this news and information before we respond or react,” the chief minister said.
He also said he was in continuous touch with Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and so are the chief secretaries of the two states.
