Meghalaya ASSEMBLY Elections 2023

Meghalaya is all set to go to polls this month. Meghalaya will vote in a single phase on February 27 with the couting of votes to be held on March 2. In the 2018 Meghalaya elections, a coalition led by the National People's Party formed the state government, with Conrad Sangma becoming chief minister. BJP had won two seats in the 2018 polls. It had contested 47 seats in the 60-member assembly. A total of 375 candidates are in the fray for 60 seats of the Meghalaya assembly elections, which will go to the polls on February 27. The ruling NPP is fighting the elections on 57 seats, the Congress and BJP are contesting all the 60 seats, while the TMC has fielded candidates in 58 seats. The United Democratic Party (UDP) is contesting the elections on 47 seats, the VPP on 18 seats, and the HSDP on 11 seats. All the parties are fighting the elections on their own. In all, 339 male candidates and 36 female candidates will be contesting for the 60 seats. The National People's Party launched its campaign on 23 January 2023 in Adokgre, North Garo Hills district. Sangma termed the TMC an outsider party in Meghalaya and said that TMC leaders were ready to leave their party after the election. NPP's manifesto details the party's vision for the people of Meghalaya for 2023-28, focusing on creating opportunities and employment for the youth, and support to farmers and villages and also includes a summary of the key achievements of its government, titled "Promises Delivered" and underlines the NPP's "vision" to create 5 lakh more jobs for the youth. Opposition Trinamool Congress (TMC) was the first political party to release its election manifesto for the Meghalaya assembly polls. TMC manifesto promises 3 lakh jobs in 5 years, with a monthly allowance of Rs. 1000 for unemployed youth aged 21-40 under MYE scheme. The manifesto promises job cards and a monthly transfer of Rs 1000 to female tourism workers and households through the MFI WE scheme. Meanwhile, the Congress has promised a monthly assistance of Rs 3000 to single below poverty line (BPL) mothers, a job for every household and uninterrupted power supply.
