Himachal Pradesh has maintained a tradition of not returning the ruling party to power. The state has alternatively gone to the Congress and BJP kitties over the past few decades. The ruling BJP will is hoping to buck the trend and retain power. It is banking on the leadership of chief minister Jai Ram Thakur and the development plank with "double engine government" to woo voters. The party has launched intensive campaigning, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, home minister Amit Shah and party president JP Nadda, also a "son of the soil," holding several "mega rallies" in the state. The Congress on the other hand will be hoping the electorate sticks to the tradition of alternating between the BJP and itself. Many from the central leadership, including Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, has joined the campaigning in Himachal Pradesh. It is also hoping that the vibes from Rahul Gandhi's Bharat Jodo yatra will have a positive reflection at the ballots. The Congress is targeting the BJP on the issues of inflation and price rise. However the entry of AAP might change the math altogether. Whose apple cart will the Arvind Kejriwal-led party upset- the Congress's or the BJP's? AAP has promised 300 units of free electricity to every household, six lakh government jobs, unemployment allowance of Rs 3000 and a return to the old pension scheme in its manifesto to impress voters.
