Surat: Leader of opposition and AAP municipal councillor Payal Sakariya filed a criminal defamation complaint under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against two APP municipal councillors in a local court on Thursday.
Sakariya approached the court for alleged insulting statements against her in the general board meeting of Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC).
The complaint was filed against two counsellors Ashok Dhami and Kanu Gediya for their alleged derogatory comments on Jun 26. Dhami and Gediya had earlier announced joining the BJP.
The appeal was filed in the court of the third judicial magistrate, first class. According to Ajay Mewawala, Sakariya’s lawyer, “The judge is on leave and the court is yet to schedule a date for hearing. The decision to admit the case will be made after the hearing.”
According to Skariya’s complaint, the incident occurred during the SMC’s general board meeting when she was opposing the cancellation of discussion in zero hours by the mayor. At that time, Dhami made allegations against her, followed by similar allegations from Gediya.
The case has been registered under the IPC as the incident took place in June.
