The accident took place when the driver lost control of the vehicle in an attempt to overtake a truck. The major incident was averted as the bus overturned and slid 15ft away from road and stopped due to trees instead of falling into a gorge.
Ahwa DySP S G Patil said: “The bus had left Surat at 1am on Sunday with families from Begampura, Nanpura and other areas. They were relatives and friends who had planned a trip to enjoy the monsoon in Saputara.”
There were 66 persons including the driver, two organizers and a cook. “When it was returning to Surat at 5.30pm, the driver lost control and the bus and went off road and overturned. Two children, a boy and a girl aged around 5 years died while 28 suffered injuries. Out of them, the condition of four is critical and were shifted to Ahwa for treatment. The remaining 24 are undergoing treatment at local facilities.”
Though it was a Sunday, there were more police personnel in the field due to the monsoon. This resulted in the injured being promptly shifted to hospitals.
