Trichy: Tension prevailed in Trichy city on Monday when BJP youth wing members staged a bike rally to celebrate the 78th
Independence Day despite a police ban. The police arrested two functionaries, who were later released on bail.
The BJP youth wing had planned a two-wheeler rally from Major Saravanan Memorial Square to the house of freedom fighter VVS Iyer in Varaganeri as part of nationwide celebrations.
However, city police denied permission for the rally and warned that participating vehicles would be seized and legal action taken.
Police were deployed in large numbers around Major Saravanan Memorial Square to prevent gatherings.
Consequently, the BJP members abandoned their original plan and instead held a procession from their district office, led by BJP state youth wing secretary Ramesh Siva and state general secretary Gautham Nagarajan. Over 50 members rode their two-wheelers with the national flag, proceeding through Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital, Madhuram Hospital, and MGR Statue before returning to the BJP office.
Despite the police ban, the BJP successfully carried out their modified rally. Gautham Nagarajan criticized the restrictions. “We submitted a request for permission at the sessions court police station in Trichy on Sunday, but it was denied. We proceeded with the rally anyway.
It is unclear whether Tamil Nadu is governed by the Dravidian model or the British system, given the severe restrictions on Independence Day celebrations,” he said.
