TRICHY: Hours after Tamil film director Mohan G was arrested by Trichy district police for his remarks about alleged adulteration of Palani panchamirtham with tablets including contraceptive pills, a Trichy court released him on bail on Tuesday for not following arrest procedures.
Mohan, 39, has directed the Tamil films Draupadi, Pazhaya Vannarapettai, Rudra Thandavam and Bakasuran.
He had claimed in an interview to a YouTube channel that he heard that tablets causing impotency and contraceptive pills were mixed with panchamirtham of Palani temple.
He also raised suspicions about the destruction of a huge quantity of the prasadam. Amid the raging controversy over the use of adulterated ghee in Tirupati laddu, his remarks drew the attention of HR&CE officer Kaviyarasu of Samayapuram Mariamman temple.
Based on a complaint from Kaviyarasu, Samayapuram police booked Mohan on charges of spreading falsehood with the intent to incite violence and disturbing communal harmony, and arrested him from Chennai on Monday evening.
He was brought to Trichy on Tuesday and produced before the judicial magistrate court-III. After hearing the prosecution and the defence lawyers, magistrate K R Balaji refused to remand Mohan and ordered to release him on bail saying proper arrest procedures have not been followed.
Reacting to the arrest, PMK founder Dr S Ramadoss and party president Dr Anbumani Ramadoss said Mohan's statements have been misconstrued.
"What Mohan stated in the interview was what he heard about the panchamirtham, and that it may have been an attempt to demean the govt," Ramadoss said.
Anbumani said Mohan was arrested like a terrorist. "Had the govt revealed why panchamirtham was destroyed, there would not have been any trouble," added Anbumani.
