Trichy: Trichy corporation has conducted a preliminary study to develop an all-weather integrated laundry centre on the banks of the Kollidam in Srirangam. The move comes as the discharge of surplus water or lack of adequate water in the river frequently affects the business and livelihood of launderers residing in Srirangam and Thiruvanaikoil.
Corporation sources said that recently mayor Mu Anbalagan and engineering department officials inspected around five acres of land available near the Yatri Nivas building.
The vacant space was used as a temporary helipad ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Srirangam earlier this year. The corporation plans to develop the integrated laundry centre on about 10,000sqft of this land.
The proposed facility will have a water source, separate space to wash and dry clothes and an exclusive zone to iron clothes. “The land belongs to the HR&CE department that manages the Arulmigu Ranganathaswamy temple. If it provides us the permission, a layout will be prepared to float a tender for launching construction works,” an official source said.
Around 110 families of launderers at Azhagiripuram in Thiruvanaikoil are expected to be benefitted from the centre. They have been using the Azhagiripuram ghats on the Kollidam river to wash clothes. “The laundry centre will be provided with a borewell to provide water in the dry period.
Wastewater generated by the facility will be fed to the sewage treatment plant (STP) near the Srirangam STEM park,” the official added.
