“The baby had Rh incompatibility, a condition that can occur during pregnancy when the mother has Rh-negative blood, and the baby has Rh-positive blood. This incompatibility can lead to various complications for the newborn if left untreated. The baby weighed only 1.6 kg. The attending paediatrician determined the baby's condition to be critical and immediately recommended transferring her to the NICU.
“After being admitted to the NICU, the baby was treated by Dr BS Chakravarthy and Dr Sathya Kumari, along with other doctors, nurses, post-graduates, and staff who worked tirelessly to save the baby’s life. Such treatment would have cost around Rs 50 to 60 lakhs in a private corporate hospital. The baby remained in KGH for 56 days and received expensive medications and blood transfusions,” added Dr Sivananda.
The baby’s father, Vishnu Murthy, thanked KGH Superintendent Dr P Sivananda for providing all facilities. “We express our gratitude to the superintendent, doctors, nurses, and staff for saving our baby’s life,” he said.
During the baby’s transfer to the NICU on June 18, the father, Vishnu Murthy, carried the oxygen cylinder himself and took the baby to the NICU. Someone filmed this incident and posted it on social media, leading to widespread speculation of medical negligence. However, Murthy later clarified that he had carried the baby and the oxygen cylinder out of anxiety and that no one from the hospital had forced him to do so.
