Over 3,000 people await organs from donors

Visakhapatnam: Visakhapatnam district collector MN Harendhira Prasad urged people to pledge their organs for donation and added that the noble act brings light into the lives of many.
Addressing a gathering at the VMRDA Children's Arena, the collector said that around 5 million people in India are awaiting organ transplant surgeries. “Lack of awareness among people is the primary reason for the shortage of organs.Despite being eligible for organ donation, many hesitate due to misconceptions. Medical staff and NGOs should create awareness among the public to encourage organ donation," he said.
GVMC commissioner P Sampath Kumar urged officials to conduct rallies and awareness programmes about organ donation.
Jeevandan state coordinator and VIMS director Dr K Rambabu said: “Organs collected from a brain-dead person can save lives of eight people. Over 3,000 people in AP are looking for organs from donors for transplant surgeries. Awareness programmes on organ donation have been conducted in Visakhapatnam for the past 15 days. As many as 136 people received organs this year, which is a positive development,” he said
