Amar Singh Chamkila, the famous Punjabi singer, was once offered a film role by Bollywood star Sridevi after she admired his performance. However, he declined due to language barriers and financial concerns. His life story is now portrayed in a biopic directed by Imtiaz Ali on Netflix, starring Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra.

Amar Singh Chamkila is not just the name of the artist, but a legacy. Though his tragic death left a void that to date has not been filled, his life was a series of great milestones and stories. Some of those stories people are aware of, while some still haven’t come out. For instance, did you know Bollywood’s most loved actress Sridevi wanted to work with Chamkila, so much so that she was even ready to do a Punjabi movie?
In an old interview, Chamkila’s friend Sawarn Sivia told India Today that when Sridevi saw the singer performing, she was so impressed that she offered him a movie with her, but Amar Singh turned her down.

According to the reports he said, “Sridevi was a fan of Amar Singh Chamkila; she even asked him to be a hero in her film. But he told her he can’t speak in Hindi. She offered to get him trained in a month, but he said he would lose ₹10 lakh in that time. Sridevi then agreed to do a Punjabi film with him, but that couldn’t happen.”

Born in a small village in Punjab, Amar Singh Chamkila’s polarising music got him a lot of fame. He and his wife Amarjot were the most loved Punjabi singing dou and who performed in various states and garnered love and popularity. However, Chamkila’s songs and music didn’t go down well with a segment of people and on March 8, 1988, he along with his wife and two other group members was assassinated mercilessly.
In 2023, Diljit Dosanjh released the movie 'Jodi,' which was inspired by Chamkila's life. It was headlined by Diljit and Nimrat Khaira. Diljit wasn't able to acquire rights for Chamkila's biopic and thus, he made 'Jodi.' Later, filmmaker Imtiaz Ali approached Diljit with a biopic on the iconic singer and then they brought the real life of the singer on reel.
