Hyderabad, the capital city of the Indian state of Telangana has a tropical climate. It receives monsoon from June to September bringing relief from hot and humid weather. The rain leads to waterlogging and traffic snarls in several parts of the city.
The downpour leaves numerous roads inundated making it tough for commuters to make their way through them. Motorists struggled to wade their way through the water, even manholes in places such as Puranapul gets exposed following the heavy rains, causing much inconvenience to both travelers and local residents.
On October 02, 2017, a huge cumulonimbus cloud burst over the city's Greater Hyderabad, causing a deluge and nearly 13.25cm rain pouring over the city. This short two-hour stretching disaster killed three people and inundated several popular areas. Moreover, around 4 people were killed in the suburbs four were killed in a lightning strike at Narayankhed.
In 2023, after a ten-day delay, the monsoon graced Hyderabad on June 21, bringing a sigh of relief to its residents. The eagerly awaited rainfall brought much-needed respite to the locals, who had endured scorching temperatures and relentless heatwaves.
Intense rains and thundershows lashed Hyderabad in the last week of July, bringing the city to a grinding halt. Right from the IT hub - cutting across Hi-Tec City, Gachibowli, Financial District - to Jubilee Hills, Banjara Hills, Begumpet, Mehdipatnam and beyond, the city's busy stretches were chock-a-block with traffic amidst inundation and waterlogging in several areas.
The 30-minute blinding rain stopped traffic and brought visibility down to a few yards.
Key roads that were flooded by the downpour which started around 5.30pm included Raj Bhavan Road, Khairatabad, Nampally, Somajiguda and Abids.
A barrage of videos and photographs shared by motorists on social media showed water gushing onto the roads from overhead Metro pillars in Attapur, vehicles partly submerged on clogged stretches of Malakpet and two-wheeler riders precariously making their way through overflowing bylanes in Musarambagh. Dozens of complaints regarding congestion were also posted along with alerts for others leaving from work or stepping out for some reason.
In Hyderabad, the cumulative rainfall received during the current monsoon season stands at 463.9mm, compared to the average rainfall of 455.9 mm.
