Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: A day after the state cabinet approved the second phase of milk development project with an outlay of Rs 149 crore for Marathwada and Vidarbha, farmers said on Wednesday that they were excited to reap the tangible benefits of the project.
The project, to be executed till 2026-27, aims to boost farmers’ income and increase milk production in the state.
As part of the project, around 13,400 cows and buffaloes would be distributed to farmers in 19 districts of Vidarbha and Marathwada, said an official release. Sunil Pawar, a farmer from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, said a helping hand was needed for farmers to cope with various challenges. “Dairy development is gradually becoming the main occupation of farmers as the field of agriculture is increasingly being subjected to the vagaries of monsoon. Dairy development is facing the challenge of rising inflation and official help is needed to tide over the situation,” he said.
The project has a total planned expenditure of Rs 328.42 crore, of which the remaining financial burden would be borne by farmers. The first phase of the project was introduced in 2016 in 11 districts in Marathwada and Vidarbha.
“The milk development project will facilitate artificial insemination and IVF techniques to increase the number of better milk-producing livestock. It will also offer quality fodder, a balanced diet, and different veterinary services,” said an official release. Meanwhile, the state cabinet on Tuesday also gave its nod for changing the title of donated lands and lands belonging to religious institutions from Marathwada to Class I. The region has around 42,710 hectares of such lands and owners would now face relaxed terms and conditions while carrying out transactions involving these properties.
