Berhampur: A 22-year-old youth lost his life to overspeeding. But instead of an accident claiming his life, it was a group of villagers who allegedly beat him up, apparently angry that he was speeding on his bike while crossing their area, causing his death.
The incident took place at Bada Kharida village under Kabisurya Nagar police station limits in Ganjam district on Saturday.
The youth, Siban Pal of Arakhapur near Purushottampur, died of head injuries on Sunday. He was allegedly hit on the head with a stone.
Subodh Kumar Sahoo, inspector-in charge at Kabisurya Nagar police station, said, “We have already identified the accused persons involved in the murder and two of them have been detained for interrogation. Search is underway to nab the other accused.”
Pal, who used to work at a private firm in Bengaluru, was passing through Bada Kharida with his friends on their bikes at high speed when his vehicle skidded and fell on the road. Though no one was injured, villagers objected to the bikers passing through the area at such great speed.
Subsequently, an argument broke out between them, and while Pal’s friends fled from the spot, the villagers, in a fit of rage, hit his head with a stone and he started bleeding. Villagers then informed the police who took Pal to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur. He died on Sunday morning during treatment.
