NEW DELHI: The Congress criticised Prime Minister
Narendra Modi on Saturday for not visiting Manipur amid ongoing turmoil.
Congress general secretary in-charge of communications, Jairam Ramesh, pointed out that despite the troubled state, the Prime Minister continues to plan travels elsewhere in India and abroad.
Ramesh stated that the violence in Manipur began on May 3, 2023.
Following this, a three-member Commission of Inquiry was established on June 4, 2023, to investigate the causes and spread of the unrest.
“It was given six months to submit its report. No report has been submitted till now. The Commission has just been given time till Nov 24, 2024, to do so,” Ramesh said in a post on X.
His remarks follow the government’s decision to extend the Commission’s deadline to November 20, 2024. The Commission, led by former Gauhati High Court Chief Justice Ajai Lamba, was formed to review the violence that has resulted in over 220 deaths.
The panel includes retired IAS officer Himanshu Shekhar Das and retired IPS officer Aloka Prabhakar. They have been tasked with investigating the origins and spread of the violence and riots affecting various communities in Manipur since May 3, 2023.
Ethnic violence between the Meiteis from Imphal Valley and the Kuki-Zo groups from the surrounding hills has resulted in over 220 deaths and left thousands homeless since May last year.
