NEW DELHI: A phone snatching incident left a young DU student injured in north Delhi's Maurice Nagar on Saturday evening. Two bike-borne men snatched her iPhone while she was riding an e-rickshaw, causing her to fall and sustain injuries. The girl resisted the thieves, but they escaped with her phone.
Police have registered a case of robbery and are searching for the culprits.
In her complaint, the victim stated, "An ‘I-phone 14' was stolen between 9.30pm and 10 pm while I was on a moving e-rickshaw...The phone was snatched by two people riding a bike alongside the e-rickshaw. The person riding the pillion snatched the phone."
I fell down from the e-rickshaw and got badly bruised, she added.
Police are examining CCTV footage from nearby areas to identify the suspects and their motorcycle. They are also appealing to the public to provide any information that may lead to their arrest.
This was not the first time that a person was injured during snatching. A 23-year-old woman was injured after falling from a moving autorickshaw during a scuffle with phone snatchers in northeast Delhi's Karawal Nagar in March. In the same month, a 23-year-old woman constable was hurt after being dragged during a snatching attempt in northeast Delhi's Bhajanpura.
Last year, a 66-year-old woman from Arunachal Pradesh died when she fell from an e-rickshaw while resisting a snatching attempt in Civil Lines. In Sept, two men on a bike dragged a 26-year-old woman off an e-rickshaw in Sultanpuri while trying to snatch her mobile phone. In Aug, a 24-year-old woman teacher fell off an auto and got dragged for some distance after being targeted by snatchers in Saket.
