Panaji: Minister for fisheries,
Nilkanth Halarnkar, on Monday called for reservations for Goan students at the proposed private fisheries university at Tivim. “Many students currently travel to other states for a degree in fisheries. Goan students must therefore be given reservations at the private university,” Halarnkar said.
Tivim panchayat has invited villagers to submit suggestions and objections to the local body or the director of industries about setting up of the university by Sep 25.
World Peace University, Maharashtra academy of engineering and educational research’s MIT group of institutions (MIT-WPU) has requested approval from the Goa investment promotion and the facilitation board to set up a state private university. IPB has decided to grant an in-principle approval to land belonging to Tivim comunidade. About the new private university in Tivim within a no-development zone, Halarnkar said that the matter doesn’t concern his portfolio. “This is an issue of the education department,” he said.
The minister said that Goa has private educational institutions which have been successful, such as the Goa Institute of Management (GIM), and highlighted that the land in question for the fisheries’ university belongs to the comunidade.
