Madurai: The
Madras high court on Monday directed the Theni principal district judge (PDJ) to inspect and submit a report on a plea which sought to relocate a municipality dump yard near the govt law college in the district.
A division bench of justice R Subramanian and justice L Victoria Gowri passed the order while hearing a public interest litigation filed by S Mahendran of Theni district.
The petitioner stated that the govt law college campus, which extends over 12 acres on Thappukundu Road in Theni, was inaugurated in 2022. The dumping of garbage in a dump yard near the college and setting them on fire causes difficulty to college students. He stated that in a reply to RTI queries regarding the impact of the garbage dumping in the area, Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board (TWAD) stated that the groundwater there is not fit for any use. The students who stay in the hostel are constantly susceptible to the health hazards because of the water and air pollution, he said.
The petitioner stated that he also learnt through RTI that the principal of the college had submitted several representations to the authorities to relocate the dump yard, but in vain. Hence, the petitioner moved court seeking to relocate the municipality dump yard. The hearing in the case was adjourned to Sep 9.
