Tuticorin: Fishermen went on a
strike on Monday over the price hike of ice slabs they utilize to store their catch during fishing operations.
Fishermen said the ice slab manufacturers have increased the price by 10-20 per piece suddenly and such a hike is very steep. On an average, more than 7,000 ice slabs are procured by 267 trawlers that take out fishing expeditions daily, they said.
Each trawler loads at least 35 ice slabs each weighing 50kg. An ice slab was priced 140 till recently.
The trawler owners sought roll-back of the hike stating that they spend 4,000-4,500 for a trip on ice bars and the price hike will further increase their operating cost.
Meanwhile, the ice slab manufacturers cited the recent hike in power tariffs and increasing transportation cost for the price hike.
Since the row between trawler owners and ice slab manufacturers could not be resolved, the trawler owners took out the strike. They said they will continue the strike till the ice slab manufacturers roll back the prices to the previous level.
