Trichy: Trichy city police arrested two members of the Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) on Tuesday for posting derogatory messages on social media against Dr V Varunkumar, the superintendent of police, Trichy district.
Thillai Nagar police arrested P Thirupathi, 33, from Oormachikulam near Samayanallur in Madurai, and K. Kannan, 48, from S Ramalingapuram in Rajapalayam taluk, Virudhunagar district, for posting defamatory content on X.
The two were charged with multiple offenses, including abetment, criminal conspiracy, threatening a public servant, criminal intimidation, defamation, and publishing obscene material online, under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Information Technology (IT) Act.
The charges were based on a complaint filed by SP Varunkumar at the Thillai Nagar police station.
Police indicated that additional individuals may be implicated in the case due to their derogatory comments on X.
The arrests follow the NTK members’ defamatory and threatening posts on X in response to a legal notice served to NTK coordinator Seeman by SP Varunkumar’s counsel. The notice was related to Seeman’s derogatory public speech in Chennai concerning an alleged leaked audio involving a woman functionary of his party.
