NEW DELHI: Congress MP Abdul Khaleque, who was not given a ticket for upcoming Lok Sabha elections in
Assam, tendered his resignation from the party on Friday.
Khaleque, representing Barpeta, submitted his resignation letter to the national president
Mallikarjun Kharge, stepping down from his primary membership.
This decision comes after the party chose Deep Bayan, state Seva Dal chief, as their candidate for the Barpeta constituency, sidelining Khaleque.
In his resignation letter, Khaleque criticised the party's approach in Assam, stating that the focus on people-centric issues has diminished. He specifically pointed out the actions of the party's state president and AICC general secretary in-charge for negatively impacting the party's prospects in the state.
Several Congress leaders from the state have left the grand old party ahead of Lok Sabha elections. This comes two weeks after Congress working president Rana Goswami resigned from his post and primary membership of the party.
With Goswami’s resignation, Assam PCC lost two of its three working presidents in the last couple of weeks. Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha recently resigned from the post of working president as he decided to extend support to the BJP-led govt. Another Congress MLA, Basanta Das, also extended support to the govt, without resigning from Congress alongwith Purkayastha.
Congress currently holds three out of 14 Lok Sabha seats in Assam, with incumbents Gaurav Gogoi and Pradyut Bordoloi retaining their party tickets for upcoming polls.
