Lamar Jackson Frustrated with Officiating Despite Ravens’ Victory Over Cowboys

Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson expressed his displeasure with officiating after their 28-25 win over the Dallas Cowboys, pointing out a controversial non-call on Dak Prescott. Coach John Harbaugh emphasized that while some penalties are unavoidable, the team must work on minimizing their own mistakes as they prepare for their next game against the Buffalo Bills.

Lamar Jackson was quick to tweet after the win by the Ravens, him being upset with the officiating about a certain call. Jackson brought up a non-call on what Jackson believed was a decisive missed penalty on Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott, saying if he made an identical play the result would have been different.
"It would’ve been a safety if I did that," Jackson tweeted, referring to his perception of inconsistent officiating.

The Controversial Call

In the play at issue, Dak Prescott almost got sacked inside the Cowboys' end zone. Trying to get out of the sack, Prescott took a chance and made a throw of the ball, which somehow was caught by one of his offensive linemen. Indeed, there was illegal touching, but Jackson believes that, under the circumstances, it would have incurred a safety rather than a mere infraction called on the field.

The controversy throws up a much broader ongoing discussion in the NFL relating to how penalties are enforced. Jackson revealed his perceived bias in officiating that might influence the treatment of certain players or teams.

Harbaugh on the Penalties

While Jackson aired his frustration, Ravens head coach John Harbaugh had a more measured view. While acknowledging his concern, he says the team has a role to play in their other mistakes.
"The ones that maybe shouldn't be called, we can't do anything about those. But the ones that should be called, we've got to clean those up," Harbaugh said, via the team website. "And that's on us. It's our responsibility to do it. It's hurting us. I mean, it's costing us points in the end. A reminder that the Ravens were flagged for so many infractions in that game. He emphasized that if this team is to be great, then allowing opponents to win by inches must not become the norm.

A Call for Clean Play

The two coaches agree on one issue; the penalties, whether justified or not, will indeed affect the game. Jackson is clear about where his frustrations are, with officiating, while Harbaugh's focus is getting the Ravens straightened up on their own mistakes. The team remains determined to limit its penalties going forward, especially now that the battles are more grueling in the coming weeks.

Preparation for the Bills

With a week four matchup looming with the Buffalo Bills, the Ravens know improving their discipline is going to be important. And while the debate over officiating likely will rage on through NFL season, the Ravens themselves are going to try cleaning up their play to reduce penalties to perhaps penalizing their performance.
That will have to work well against those frustrations as the Ravens look to continue building what has already been shaping up to be a very competitive season with a focus on reducing penalties.
