Shiv Sena

Shiv Sena is a regional political party of India, which was formed late cartoonist Bal Thackeray in the year 1966. The party was formed to build a movement to help Marathi job aspirants to procure job opportunities in Mumbai. Hindu nationalism, commonly referred as hindutva, and pro-Marathi ideology are the party's main agendas.

In 1968, Shiv Sena entered the political framework of Bombay by winning 42 seats out of 121 in civic elections. Gradually extended its base on a pan-India level, and aligned with the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) in Maharashtra.

Shiv Sena and BJP alliance came into power for the first time in 1995, and Manohar Joshi, prominent Shiv Sena leader became the Chief Minister of the state.

After losing in the 2009 Assembly elections, the party got back in power in 2012 with Mumbai's civic body by winning 72 seats.

Party leader Bal Thackeray died of a cardiac arrest in November 2012, with son Udhav Thackeray becoming his successor.

The party is known to have a powerful hold over the Mumbai based Indian film industry - Bollywood, and is often called an 'extremist' and 'fascist' party.

Shiv Sena has been blamed for the 1970 communal riots in Bhiwandi, the 1984 Bhiwandi riots and the 1992-1993 Bombay riots. In 1989, the party entered an alliance with BJP for Lok Sabha and Maharashtra assembly elections.

It has been a coalition partner in the National Democratic Alliance since 1998, including the Vajpayee Government during 1998-2004 and the present Narendra Modi Government.
