The Dhanushkodi region receives a rich population of migratory birds, including flamingos, during the migratory season. The lagoon with its thick foliage of wild babul trees is also home to many resident birds.
There are also mangrove forests in the islets in the Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park. Forest officials said the initiative would help tourists gain knowledge on the birds coming to Dhanushkodi as well as the mangrove forests of the region.
