Chennai: National Investigation Agency (NIA) sleuths conducted searches at 11 locations across Chennai, Tambaram, Pudukottai, and Kanyakumari as part of investigation against Hizb ut-Tahrir (HUT), an outfit involved in illegal recruitment activities. Officials seized various incriminating materials, including digital devices, unaccounted cash, and literature linked to HUT.
According to an official release, the outfit had been conducting an anti-election campaign in Tamil Nadu, promoted as part of a broader conspiracy by HUT to establish Islamic rule in the country.

NIA took over the case from city police in July, and investigations are ongoing. Authorities are currently analyzing the confiscated material
On Aug 1, TN police, in coordination with NIA, arrested six HUT sympathizers following a specific intelligence tip-off. Among those arrested were engineer Hameed Hussain, his father and brother, all charged under Unlawful Activities Prevention Act. Police had then said that Hussain was the mastermind behind the recruitment and that he had been uploading videos on social media about Islamic caliphate. Subsequent interrogations of the three led authorities to apprehend three more individuals during raids conducted in Chennai and Tambaram. On Aug 31, NIA arrested Aziz Ahmed alias Jaleel Aziz Ahmed at Bengaluru International Airport.
