Chennai: History-sheeter Manikandan alias ‘CD' Mani, 49, broke his leg while trying to escape after being cornered by a police team in Salem on Sunday. However, the police have yet to release a photograph of the injured Mani to the media.
Acting on a tip-off, a team led by SI Kanagaraj tracked down CD Mani, who was hiding near Salem. Mani had been staying in a rented house while attending court proceedings related to his pending cases.
On spotting the police, Mani tried to escape from the house, he slipped and and suffered a fracture on his right leg. The police team rescued Mani, and he was admitted to the Govt Stanley Hospital for treatment. This is not the first time Mani has suffered a broken leg.
On July 19, 2018, Mani broke his leg and hand while using the washroom at a police station during an investigation. He was subsequently admitted to Govt Stanley Hospital for treatment. In another incident on June 2, 2021, Mani again broke his leg and hand while attempting to escape after opening fire at SI Balakrishnan on Outer Ring Road near Porur.
Police said Mani, who is involved in 19 cases, including half a dozen murders, became a notorious rowdy after aligning with his mentor, Dindigul Pandi, a well-known gangster. After Pandi was killed in an encounter near Neelankarai, Mani rose to prominence. In March 2020, Mani and the now-slain rowdy Kakkathope Balaji narrowly escaped an assassination attempt by the Sambavam Senthil gang, who hurled country-made bombs at them on the busy Anna Salai.
