New Delhi: All India Institute of Medical Sciences (
AIIMS) is all set to offer technology training for robotic-assisted surgery to healthcare professionals nationwide, including their own surgeons, students, and nursing staff who work in operation theatres.
On Tuesday, AIIMS and Intuitive, "a global technology leader in minimally invasive care and the pioneer of robotic-assisted surgery," signed a memorandum of understanding to establish an innovative training centre for robotic-assisted surgery at AIIMS.
The institute now has three training platforms available in a single centre. Professor VK Bansal of AIIMS's surgery department said that having access to all three platforms, including the da Vinci system, in one location is advantageous for surgeons. AIIMS has partnered with India Medtronic Private Limited and embraced the Mantra surgical robotic system. "Surgeons can select the system that suits their needs," Professor Bansal said. "The decision can be made based on factors such as cost and economy while installing."
Gary S. Guthart, the CEO of Intuitive, said: "For Intuitive, this MoU represents a milestone in our shared commitment to advancing surgical training and improving patient outcomes."
Dr M Srinivas, director of the institute, said: "With the rising disease burden, the demand for advanced technologies like robotic-assisted surgery is growing. The da Vinci system offers enhanced precision, flexibility and control, improved accuracy, reduced recovery times."
